The Jersey City Public Schools is committed to preparing students for college and career readiness in the visual arts. It is our mission to provide an exemplar arts education to all students. The District’s Visual Arts Curricula offers discipline based arts education and for the gifted, accelerated arts instruction. Gifted young artists begin rigorous training from grades 1-8 through the Artistically Talented Curricula. For exceptionally gifted students, the JC Arts junior academy, visual arts honors course, is offered to students in the 8th grade.
For gifted arts high school students, the district offers advanced training through the Jersey City Arts High School Program. The Jersey City Arts High School Program (JC Arts) is a conservatory model for students advanced in the visual and performing arts. Established in 1981, our mission has been to facilitate the development of artistic excellence by surpassing the norm and attaining college acceptances and merit scholarships for our students. Our four-year program is open to all highly talented college bound arts students residing in Jersey City and attending a Jersey City Public Schools District High School or HCST County Prep.
All JC Arts, Visual Arts, candidates must meet rigorous standards evident in portfolio review and audition processes. Once accepted, JC Arts students participate in a sequential student learning standards based arts curricula incorporating the four major strands of a comprehensive arts education: aesthetics, arts criticism, creation/ performance, and historical / social/ cultural contexts.
Visual Arts students at JC Arts have received numerous awards on the local, state, national and international level. The list of collegiate merit scholarship(s) awarded to our graduates is the pride of the Jersey City Public Schools District and community at large. Jersey City’s strength as a diverse cultural community is represented in the art works produced by our JC Arts student body. JC Arts students hale from the following JCPS high schools : Dickinson High School, Ferris High School, Lincoln High School, Snyder High School, McNair Academic High School, Liberty High School, Infinity Institute, and Innovation High School. Student are also accepted from HCST County Prep. Accepted students will be provided with transportation to attend Visual Arts courses at JC Arts High School Program. ( Students will either go directly to JC Arts and take district transportation to return to their high school or receive district transportation to JC Arts and go directly home from the program)
To date, JC Arts, Visual Arts, alumni have won in excess $24,000,000 in merit scholarships to such prestigious institutions as Pratt Institute, Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, Yale University, New York University, Rutgers, and Parsons The New School of Design among others.
